Speaker 0 00:00:02 Hi guys, uh, just trying to grab your attention. So I'm, um, just in a short video, just to talk about the importance to take time off in, in your business. So I've recently had, uh, a week away in New York with my family. Um, so it's not something we do very often in terms of go, go to New York or even go to broad. Often the kids have been to, I mean, our twins are 12. Our out oldest is actually just turned 19. They've had a lot of holidays in Waymoth corn war, no sort of places. Um, but we, the whole COVID thing, we wanted to get away somewhere else. And the way the pricing worked out, we just had the opportunity to go to New York. But anyway, don't matter where you go. Cause I'm also a big fan of the UK and corn wall for way, but the point is taking some time off in your, from your business.
Speaker 0 00:00:59 So if you run a business, uh, I often hear quite a few of our clients say that they've, um, not had a holiday for two years or three years. If I'm honest, that that gives me all sorts of alarm bowels or that so many warning signs are going off. You know, if you were in a cockpit of an, of a plane or something, all these alarms were going off. All these red lights not taking holiday is, is a huge problem in your business because you know, Steven Covey talks about who's, who's the author of the, um, the seven habits of highly effective people. He talks about the concept of basically you are the golden goose. You, you are the, you are the golden goose in your business. Um, you are laying the golden eggs. So the golden eggs is the output. You are driving the business and you can't just keep on, you know, treating the golden goose like a machine and just gonna carry on going.
Speaker 0 00:01:55 You need to recharge your batteries. I know this is not new stuff you need probably thinking, I know, I know about this. You know, this is common sense, but I would say to you, you know, are you doing it common sense is not common practice. You know, are you actually doing these things? Are you taking the time off? Um, even if it's a short weekend away, every few months, you, you you'll be better for it in your business will be better for it. So that's one thing I wanted to talk about is so important. And actually, if you can't do that, there are alarm barriers in your business. So you need to be asking questions what's going on in your business. What's not working. Um, don't just plow through with your head down, carrying on, um, like, like that's normal because I know a lot of business owners go through that. And when you're starting a business, that might be the case. You know, I'm, I'm not saying it's easy to, to start a business or to run a business. But if you are constantly in that position where you can't take that time off, that's normally some sort of a, a warning sign. Um, but the other thing I want to talk about is even when you're a bit further along the line, you're more of established as a business.
Speaker 1 00:02:59 It's a brilliant opportunity to take some, take some time off. So I've just, as I said, I've been to New York. I ended up having over a week off because the time indifference and you lose a bit of time and we stayed in the airport hotel and night before and everything. And I haven't really checked my emails. Um, I think it's, I mean, if you work for yourself, you've got no team members, then you probably might need to check your emails. But even then I would question can't you just put an out of office on to say, you know, I plan my work. I'm on top of everything. Um, I've put this week off I've I've gave, you know, give your clients or your customers advance warning to let them know I'm gonna take this time off. Then there's no surprises. Um, but anyway, I hadn't really dipped in, so I didn't really know what I'm coming back to in, in the office.
Speaker 1 00:03:48 And it's not been that bad. So I've, you know, you, you, in your head, you think you've got all this stuff to do, and I'm not saying it's always like that. Sometimes there's all, you know, there's a bit of chaos and there's, um, you know, some issues or, um, things you need to sort out. And some people argue that they do two weeks worth of work the week before they take holiday so that they don't come back to, to chaos. But the, the point I'm trying to make is whatever you are coming back to is a sign of your business. So if you are coming back always to chaos and you, you can't have time off, that's probably why you don't take time off and you come back and it's, there's so much going on. There's problems, all this stuff's kind of kicked off when you are not there, then that's a sign that something's probably not working or something can be improved in your business.
Speaker 1 00:04:40 And I would take as an opportunity to ask better questions of yourself and of your business. What's not working. How can we make things better? Get to the root cause what's the underlying reason for these issues. You find yourself in when you've had a bit of time off on the other hand, sometimes it will confirm you've got a good setup in your business. If you come back and it's calm, it's relaxed, you know, no one's jumping up and down too much. Then actually you've got a little bit of validation that it's going in in the right direction. I am generalizing. It does depends what you're trying to do in your business. If you don't have a team, um, then it it's a different situation. If it's just you as a, a contractor or freelancers completely different situation does depends what you're trying to do. But even if you don't have a team and it's just you, I would, I'd probably say the same thing.
Speaker 1 00:05:30 If you come back to chaos, it's not inevitable. You've got to come back to chaos because you don't have team members. It's still about how you, you running your business on your own, in the run up to, to taking that time off. How you managing your priorities, your deadlines. Do you have the right sort of customers? How do you communicate? How do you manage expectations? So, yeah, that's really, all I wanted to talk about was the idea that taking time off is super important. If you don't do that, pay attention to what's going on in your business, why can't you take that time off, but also when you do take the time off, it's a really good indicator and test for what's going on in your business and where you're at. Thanks guys. Cheers.
